![]() MILE HIGH News on Mount Washington - Vancouver Island, BC Freestylers roll up sleeves and build own site
The Mount Washington Freestyle Club spent the summer working on their most aggressive project ever: to create a full freestyle site at Mount Washington Alpine Resort. The club spent two weeks working with JR Edgett Excavating from Courtenay and JW Berry Trucking from Port Alberni to log a portion of Lower Retirement. They’ve created a full aerial tabletop and a full mogul site beside the tabletop. The locations mean they can run events almost simultaneously. It’s also been a draw for international freestyle teams who will come to Mount Washington before the 2010 Winter Olympics. “We’re excited,” said Simon Stubbs, who is Co-President with his wife, Gina. “It was a huge commitment for the Club financially. We’re looking forward to seeing some snow on it.” The Freestyle Program kicks off Jan. 2 with the Jumps and Bumps Program as well as the Development and Competitive teams. Stubbs anticipated 45-55 kids in both programs this year. The club, along with the B.C. Freestyle Ski Association is hosting the second event in the B.C. Freestyle Series Feb. 19-21. The event will bring 100 athletes to the Resort and will dovetail nicely with the departure of Olympic teams, on Feb. 10. “It’s a very big event for us. The next step for us would be to take on a National Event,” Stubbs said, adding that could happen “down the road.” Print This Article (opens in new window)
